Intellectual Rights and Copyright issues.

READING ASSIGNMENT:  2.) Intellectual Rights and Copyright issues.
TITLE OF THE ARTICLE(S): “Developing Library and Information Center Collections”
AUTHOR (S):  Evans, G. E., Saponaro, M.Z.
PUBLISHER(S):   Libraries unlimited, Westport: London. 2005.
URL:  None
Abstract of the article(s): (1-2 paragraph/s):
Libraries have modified copyright policies as well as inter-library loan practices.  A look at the present law, a library in a not-for-profit setting may borrow no more than five articles per year from any given journal.  If the library borrows more than five articles, the assumption is that the borrowing is in lieu of placing a subscription and thus is a violation of the law. If libraries cannot freely exchange books, periodicals or photocopies of copyrighted items, it is difficult to develop and maintain effective cooperative systems.
Copyright grants the creators of works certain rights that protect their interest in the work.  Originally, copyright’s purpose was to provide protection against unauthorized printing, publishing, importing, or selling of multiple copies of a work.  In essence it was protection from the unauthorized mass production and sale of a work.
Three things I learned from my Reading Assignment:
1. Libraries exist to disseminate information on a mass, usually free, basis.
2. The relationship between copyright holders and libraries is cordial and friendly.
3. Creators of works reserve certain rights that protect their interest and their work and it should be respected.
Application/Implication of the new things I learned to my work/to me as a person:
Unauthorized and mass production of creator’s work for profit or commercial purposes is prohibited.  It is against the law either digitally or in print format.  The law extends copyright protection to unpublished works. I am expected to have some knowledge on these laws so as to guide library users on the fair use of the materials.

User Interfaces of Information Resources (Visualization)

READING ASSIGNMENT:  1.) User Interfaces of Information Resources.
TITLE OF THE ARTICLE(S):Evaluating User Interfaces to Information Retrieval Systems:
A Case Study on User Support”
AUTHOR (S):  Brajnik, G., Mizzaro, S., Tasso, C.
PUBLISHER(S):  Copyright 1996 by the Association for Computing Machinery,Inc. (ACM)
URL:  -
Abstract of the article(s): (1-2 paragraph/s):
A User Interface to an IR System is a front-end program which interacts with the user and controls an underlying information retrieval system accessing information resources. Its main goal is to empower the user with the capability to operate effectively without the need of behavior and user situation (e.g. suggesting a synonymous term of a term just added to the query by the user) then it is contextual.

It is generic if it refers to general aspects or guidelines (e.g. suggesting that reducing the number of AND-ed concepts is a way to enlarge the number of retrieved items).

Three things I learned from my Reading Assignment:
1. Users have interactions with Information Resource Systems.
2.  User’s behavior does not affect the interfaces.
3.  The use of AND search term might be a useful source of generating more items.
Application/Implication of the new things I learned to my work/to me as a person:
Information Resource system as a front-end program does not work in isolation.  It is an aid to user to enable him retrieve and access information resources proficiently.  Having a thorough insight of its application and interfaces the user will benefit in information surfing and dissemination.

Abstract of the article(s): (1-2 paragraph/s):
Some industry experts use the term "web 2.0" to refer to websites that provide a means for users to share personal information such as social networking website, which allow users to modify website content like wikis, and have application software built into the site for visitors to use like e-mail and word processing programs.
The term "Web2.0" refers to 2nd generation of internet-based services such as social network sites, wikis, communication tools and folksonomies that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users.
Three things I learned from my Reading Assignment:
1. Web 2.0 is dynamic and gives users the opportunity to make changes via processor with colleagues at the same time.
2. Web 2.0 is often referred to as “wisdom of the world”. The platform can harness a wide variety of ideas putting them together in one form.
3. Users of Web 2.0 can have control of their web pages. They can re-size, manipulate etc these pages, which are no longer static.
Application/Implication of the new things I learned to my work/to me as a person:
Its application is very important in the sense that Librarians can quickly and easily create new resources for their users.  Being a new concept, it is radically changing the services of librarians, providing information, keeping in direct contact with clients and running update and selective dissemination of information services.

The internet which is also called the net is a world-wide collection of networks that links millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions and individuals.  The widely used services in the net are WWW and email.
Survey reveals that today more than 550 million hosts connects to the internet and it’s consist of local, regional, national and international networks.  No single person, company, institution, or government agency controls or owns the internet. Internet swiftly gained social prominence and significance in the late twentieth and early twenty–first century, libraries began to add Internet access and a range of new services via numerous media through which patrons could gain access to a wide expanse of information and ideas. Now, library commitment to providing access to the Internet is total, making significant contributions to the information, education, recreation, culture, and economic resources in their communities. As a result, Internet access, training, and services are now an essential part of what libraries provide to their patrons and their communities.
Three things I learned from my Reading Assignment:
1. The evolution of the World Wide Web.
2. How internet played a significant role to library services.
3. Know good examples of broadband internet services: Cable, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), Fiber, Radio signals, and Satellite.
Application/Implication of the new things I learned to my work/to me as a person:
In- adequate accessibility to internet via library services can generate digital divide consequently affecting information surfing and learning.  With this view, it is important to maintain the trend of internet connectivity to enable information dissemination to library clients at all times.

Netiquette has been known as a process of using technology to communicate with others, respecting their values and being cautious while online. The use of grammar, spellings, uppercases etc, are to be considered since they mean a lot. Netiquette has a golden rule which is to be applied while using computers, try as much as possible to do to others what you will like them to do to you.
While on the other hand Computer Ethics are procedure meant to help users use computers better which help to reduce their rate of mistakes.

Three things I learned from my Reading Assignment:
1.       To try as much as possible to respect the values and interest of other people.
2.       To ensure that I am brief and concise while on the internet, to read FAQ and be ready to forgive those who offend you.
3.       To adhere to the 10 commandments of computer ethics according to Dr. Ramon C. Barquin’s paper, "In Pursuit of a 'Ten Commandments' for Computer Ethics."

I am to apply these principles to my daily work as much as possible.  Ethics in the use of computers are very important and they are to be practiced and by doing them I will have an effective online transactions/interactions with people.  I am to take note of why, how and when I am supposed to communicate.

READING ASSIGNMENT:  2.) Computer and Internet Security

TITLE OF THE ARTICLE(S):  Computers and Internet Security (Discovering Computers), Science and Technology Resources on the internet (Computer Security)

AUTHOR (S): Shelly, G. B.; Cashman, T.J.; Vermaat, M.E . & Jane, F. Kinkus

PUBLISHER(S):  USA Thomson course technology 2008

URL: Science and Technology Resources on the internet. Retrieved July 1, 2011 from http://www.library.ucsb.edu/istl/02-fall/internet.html

Abstract of the article(s): (1-2 paragraph/s):
According to Jane, F. Kinkus, a Mathematical Science Librarian at Purdue University who states that  “Computer Security touches draws from disciplines as ethics and risk analysis, and is concerned with topics such as computer crime; the prevention, detection, and remediation of attacks; and identity and anonymity in cyberspace.”   The issue of privacy, integrity, and authenticity are very important to internet users and should not be taken lightly.
Computer and Internet security has to do with the activities of hackers, crackers, script kiddies, corporate spies, unethical employees, cyber extortionists and cyber terrorists.  These are perpetrators of cybercrime who have advanced computer and network skills of which internet users should be aware of their schemes and try as much as possible to avoid fallen into their traps.

Three things I learned from my Reading Assignment:
1.       I should be aware of common security risk like internet and network attacks, unauthorized access and use, hardware theft, software theft, information theft and system failure.
2.       Be aware of the cybercrime activities and those people who are involved.
3.       Ensure that my records, vital information are secured and are kept confidential even though there are not absolute security measures.

Application/Implication of the new things I learned to my work/to me as a person:
With the above view in mind, I am reminded to be cautious as I use the internet and ensure that my information is kept secured.  I am to take note of cybercrime perpetrators since they are also computer experts.
I am made to understand that the need to backup my computer files and records are very important, so as not to experience system’s failure. And most importantly, to ensure that I am not a party with these perpetrators who are everywhere in the society.   As I am better informed, it is my prerogative to inform library users too.
